Tips For Hurricane Preparedness In Daytona Beach FL

Today, all is quiet on the eastern front here in Port Orange FL. Although hurricane season has already begun here in the Daytona Beach area, I thought I’d make reference to the top ten things to do in preparation for the Florida hurricane season.Hurricane_ Katrina

Hurricane Preparation Tips:

• Know Volusia County evacuation plans and know where Greater Daytona Beach area shelters will be opened.

• Stay tuned to your NOAA Weather radio for information on the storm’s progress. Be sure to have an extra supply of fresh batteries on hand or your radio will be of no use.

• Don’t just hunker down. Get shutters or cover your windows and glass doors with plywood. Air pressure inside the house will blow your roof off!

• Store non-perishable foods, a manual can opener and bottled water in a large box or plastic container with a lid to take with you if you are evacuated. Store water in empty milk jugs or better yet use soft drink bottles instead. A little trapped milk in a milk jug can contaminate the water.

• Keep trees and shrubbery trimmed.

• Grab up all important documents to take with you if you must evacuate.

• Have extra cash on hand

• Keep all your vehicles full of fuel. The last thing you want to do is sit in a line at a Port Orange gas station when a storm is approaching.

• Have pet supplies, including leashes, water, food bowls, food, pet crate and vaccination records, in a central location so they can be evacuated with you. Do not leave a pet behind. Most area shelters do not allow family pets.

• Keep prescription medicines in a central place so they can be evacuated with you or taken into your safe room during the storm.
