The 48th anniversary of the Rolex 24 At Daytona kickoffs Speedweeks 2010 and the season opens with the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series, set for Jan. 30-31.

The 2010 Rolex 24, America’s most prestigious sports car race. The Rolex 24 is America’s most prestigious sports car event and one of only two 24-hour sports car events in the world. The twice-around-the-clock challenge attracts a star-studded driver lineup from all racing disciplines around the world.

Drivers who competed in the 2009 edition of the Rolex 24 included NASCAR stars Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch and Juan Pablo Montoya, IndyCar stars Dario Franchitti, Ryan Briscoe, Scott Dixon, Buddy Rice and Danica Patrick and sports car veterans Wayne Taylor, Max Angelelli, Hurley Haywood, Scott Pruett and Alex Gurney.

There were 2 bridges before the more modern bridge we see today.

According to a book called “Port Orange” written by Harold Cardwell and Priscilla Cardwell, the first bridge was built in 1906 was made of sable palm pilings and pine timbers. After that a second wooden toll bridge was built in 1951.

If you’re looking for a place to launch your boat there’s a major boat ramp area. Saturday’s can get a little crazy with boaters trying to launch their vessels. Occasionally, you may see some boat ramp rage but they may have corrected that problem by placing a law officer at the ramp to kind of keep people calm!

Fishing areas are abundant. You can fish off the docks or piers under the bridge. Keep your eyes peeled for some gentle giants – the manatees!!

Bring the family for a picnic. There are amenities such as picnic tables with grills, restrooms, and an abundance of parking spaces for cars and vehicles with boat trailers.

Travel east over the Port Orange Bridge and hang a right to go back under the bridge on the southeast side you’ll find Deck Down Under – a great place for fresh catch of the day. Quality food at very decent prices. Make it a mandatory stop if you are visiting the area. Sit out on the deck and watch the vessels go by or gaze up at the bridge if you’re a bridge lover!

Marty and I highly recommend the following:

Stonewood’s  well known Oak-Grilled Filet just got better with the addition of Portobello Ravioli, crispy onion frizette, and a Cabernet demi-glace.
 
Chef Mike’s crispy Bleu Cheese Chips topped with warm bleu cheese aioli, bleu cheese crumbles and finished with a balsamic reduction is to die for!!!

The Oak-Grilled Pork Chop served over garlic mashed potatoes and topped with a fresh Granny Smith apple chutney is a complete sensation.
 
A trio of Lobster Ravioli in a sherry cream, paired with grilled shrimp and tender sea scallops will make you beg for more.
 
Finish a perfect evening and try the Cranberry Pumpkin Cheesecake with a warm caramel sauce.

The only catch with this particular restaurant is that all the food comes in huge portions, and one cannot finish their meal. The pizzas are monster size and everyone leaves with a box.Don’t fret though, bring your friends and family and the dishes wont look so ominous (either do the prices).

Marty and I went for a quick dinner this evening. The Chicken Parmigiana was out of this world along with the Tuscan Grilled Chicken Salad!
