The Port Orange Bridge - Share Your Stories With Port Orange Juice

The Dunlawton Bridge or Port Orange Bridge is actually known as the William V. Chappell Jr. Memorial Bridge.
There were 2 bridges before the more modern bridge we see today.
According to a book called “Port Orange” written by Harold Cardwell and Priscilla Cardwell, the first bridge was built in 1906 was made of sable palm pilings and pine timbers. After that a second wooden toll bridge was built in 1951.

In 1918, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month, the world rejoiced and celebrated. An armistice was signed and the “war to end all wars” was over, hence, November 11, 1919 was set aside as Armistice Day!
Some Volusia County ceremonies to attend to honor all Veterans!
- The local VFW members host their annual Veterans Day Ceremony at City Center. .across the lake from City Hall at 10:00 AM on Nov.11th. The ceremony honors all veterans
- Marine Corps Birthday Bash Today 4:30 pm! Food, auction and more, 4:30 p.m., American Legion Post 6, 1087 Biscayne Blvd., DeLand. FREE. 386-738-0009.
- Veterans Walk, TODAY: 5k or 10k walk presented by the Happy Wanderers. Walk begins after the wreath-laying ceremony at 6 p.m. in Veterans Park, Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle, Port Orange. $3. 386-788-4026.
- Veterans Day Ceremony, SUNDAY: Ceremony with a fly over by the Spruce Creek Gaggle, 10:30 a.m., Port Orange City Center, 1000 City Center Circle, Port Orange. FREE. 386-761-7217.
- Alumni Ceremony, SUNDAY: Ceremony honoring 20 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University alumni who have lost their lives in the fight against terrorism since Sept. 11, 2007, with a War Veterans Memorial Plaque, 11 a.m., near the Legacy Walk and the Miller Instructional Center.
- Veterans Day Ceremony, SUNDAY: Featured speaker will be Belkis Pineyro-Wiggins, 1 p.m., Emory L. Bennett Veterans Nursing Home, 1920 Mason Ave., Daytona Beach. FREE. 386-274-3460.

Get Ready For Florida Lighthouse Day Sept.15th

Ponce Inlet Lighthouse will celebrate Lighthouse Day on Sept. 15th! Governor Charlie Crist has proclaimed September 15,2007 as FLorida Lighthouse Day.
Ponce Inlet lighthouse will be open from 10AM to 2PM on the 15th for family fun, demonstrations, and kids crafts.
Ponce Inlet Lighthouse is 175 ft. tall and is the tallest lighthouse in Florida.
Of the 59 lighthhouses in FLorida, 30 are still standing.
Of the 30, six are open to the public: St. Augustine, Ponce de Leon Inlet, Jupiter, Cape FLorida, Key West and Boca Grande lighthouses!!
